What is a Managed Services Provider?

Posted by Samantha Morris

A Managed Service Provider is a company that performs the activities you don’t want to do so you can better utilize your time OR does what you could do, only better. – Samantha

Managed Services Model

Although I do have a way with words, I’ll give you the “official” definition of a Managed Services Provider:

Managed services is the practice of transferring day-to-day related management responsibility as a strategic method for improved effective and efficient operations inclusive of Production Support and lifecycle build/maintenance activities. – Wikipedia

There are a number of different outsourcing models, but the Managed services model is typically a larger in scope, multi-year SLA-based strategic relationship between service provider and the outsourcer. The service provider takes on end-to-end business level accountability for outcomes.

Here are some of the benefits of choosing to outsource your IT responsibilities to a Managed Service Provider:

Future proof services, using best-of-breed technology

  • Leading Managed Service Providers (MSPs) use the best technologies on the market to deliver services. Its services are constantly upgraded with no additional cost of financial risk to their customers. You never have to worry that your Managed IT service(s) will become obsolete.

No capital expenditures and predictable monthly costs

  • A fixed monthly payment plan means that you know exactly how much the services you outsource will cost over the course of any given agreement period. You don’t have to worry about unexpected services or upgrade charges.

  • By selecting a managed services provider, you gain access to staff with specialist IT skills. You can save the expense of training your IT staff for skills they will use infrequently or at all.  If you select the right Managed Service Provider who has heavily invested into their infrastructures, be assured that they are supported by the very best technical and operations teams.

Increased Service Levels

  • MSPs can provide greater control of service levels and performance. With Service Level Agreements (SLAs) in place, you can be sure of continuity of service. A Managed Service Provider may also offer 24/7 support.

Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity

  • The ability to deliver service while avoiding interruptions is absolutely essential for Managed Service Providers. They have designed networks and data centers that are always available, resilient and redundant for maintaining business continuity. You can take advantage of their significant technological investment. Using an MSP for your data backup means your information will be safe, but more importantly, that your data is highly recoverable when disaster strikes.

Lean and Green

  • Centralizing your critical business systems with data centers and running your applications on a virtual platform, you business can benefit from a huge power saving – lowering costs and reducing your carbon footprint.
