What is "Cloud Computing" - It's more than a white fluffy thing!

As a recent hire of Asigra, while wrapping my head around the concept of cloud and cloud backup, it occurred to me that perhaps there are others like me trying to grasp what is cloud computing and how can it benefit my organization.

CloudMost people have their head in the cloud and don't even know it. No, I am not referring to flying high in the white fluffy stuff. Most people make online purchases, use social media, store pictures and do online banking on a daily basis. If you are doing these things then you are using the cloud without knowing it. So, what is the cloud? Without getting too technical: it's a space out there; where the internet resides.

According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, 2009, "Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g. networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.

Like most, you are probably on LinkedIn or other forms of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube, Flickr, etc.) or using software-as-a-service based applications (such as Salesforce CRM) in your day to day business operations. Cloud computing has become a popular option for the business world these days as it allows enterprises to be up and running in a few days (unheard of with traditional enterprise software applications) while costing less, being infinitely more scalable, secure and reliable.

Cloud Backup and Recovery Software is no different. Backing up, recovering and restoring from the cloud provides you with a cost-effective, secure and reliable method of recovering and restoring data – the lifeblood of your business. The system restores data regardless of your location, including individual files in their native format so you can resume business operations immediately. It also provides you with a flexible solution that scales as your storage capacity needs evolve as your business grows.
