Predictably Irrational with Dan Ariely

Posted by Zaid Rasid in Cloud Backup

The 2013 Asigra Cloud Backup Partner Summit is quickly approaching and we’re excited about the lineup of keynote speakers we have planned for the event. We decided to write a few posts about our upcoming speakers so you can learn a little more about their interesting backgrounds and tastes. Let’s get things started with Dan Ariely:

Dan is a professor of psychology and behavioral economics and he teaches at Duke University. Dan is a well known speaker and has conducted several TED talks that have accumulated more than 4.8 million views. His interests span a wide range of behaviors, and his sometimes unusual experiments are consistently interesting, amusing and informative, demonstrating profound ideas that fly in the face of common wisdom.

Ted Talks

I actually first learned about Dan by coming across one of his TED talks and so I was excited to hear that he would be joining us at our upcoming conference. The TED talk that introduced me to Dan is called Why We Think it’s OK to Cheat and Steal (sometimes). I remember this talk specifically because he opens the video with a very emotional story.

In this video, Dan studies some of the bugs in our moral code: the hidden reasons why we think it’s OK to cheat or steal (sometimes):

The next video, called Are We in Control of our Decisions?, examines some more examples of human behavior and in particular he uses some counter intuitive examples about the little control we have over our day to day decisions.

Dan has also authored numerous New York Times best selling books including Predictable Irrational, The Upside of Irrationality, and The Honest Truth About Dishonesty.
