Empowered: Unleash Your Employees

We were very fortunate to have Josh Bernoff at this year’s Asigra Cloud Backup Partner Summit. I read his book, Empowered, a couple of months ago and it really showed me that as an individual empowered by the powers that be here at Asigra, I really have the unique opportunity to make a positive impact in this organization.

As individuals, we’ve never been more connected, and not just through social technologies like blogs.  We’re also connected heavily through smartphones, giving us access to the internet, and each other, anytime and anywhere.

We’re the new media; we got words, pictures and videos, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google and a thousand other internet start-ups empowering us. We can say what we want, whenever and to whomever we want. Sounds bratty, but as I like to say – we do what we want!

With too many processes and departmental boundaries, organizations won’t be able to respond and act quickly enough to serve the needs of every individual that they come in contact with. The only way to overcome this is to give your employees the ability to act when necessary and more so, trust that they will act appropriately. The same technologies that empower your customers are available to your employees so let them be the “The highly empowered and resourceful operatives” – HEROes for short!

“To succeed with empowered customers, you must empower your employees to solve customer problems”

Very cool, however this may change the dynamics in your organization. Employees will come up with their own solutions to problems without seeking out guidance from management; instead management’s new job is to support and empower employees.  This may seem radical – employees doing what they want, when they want without asking permission?! You may be thinking that there’s no way you’d let this happen in your organization, but there are many organizations such as Best Buy, Rogers Communications and Toyota that are doing this today.

To learn more about how you can create HEROes in your organization, pick up Empowered by Josh Bernoff and Ted Schadler. You can also check on the complimentary website to the book at http://www.forrester.com/empowered
