Iceland Becomes Safe-Haven for UK Companies’ Data Backups London - 21st February 2005 – Asigra, the technology specialists in distributed backup and recovery software, today announced an agreement to provide Iceland’s foremost storage services provider, SecurStore with its Televaulting solution. SecurStore now includes Asigra’s Televaulting as part of its portfolio to deliver online backup and recovery services to its Icelandic and European customers, such as Og Vodafone. UK companies are becoming more and more aware of the fact that a nationwide electricity failure could occur, due to recent events such as the power outage in the US and Canada on August 14th 2003 that left 16 million people without electricity. It is therefore logical to look offshore when considering where to save a company’s data should a similar crisis occur with the UK’s National Grid, especially as new laws are coming into place, making it financially essential that companies protect their data. The ideal country to choose would be one that is close by, as well as considered ‘neutral’ in light of possible terrorist threats. Iceland is the perfect choice: NATO selected Iceland for numerous sensitive bases during the cold war; Iceland also has an incredible amount of low cost optical fibre running through it and has more cost-effective power facilities than the rest of Europe, so it is able to offer UK and European customers competitive prices for their IT services. SecurStore’s new data centre is based just outside of Reykjavik and holds the facility to mirror all backed up data to an off-site data centre in Reykjavik. With Televaulting, SecurStore can now offer customers an efficient and secure service of remotely backing up data and immediate retrieval, as opposed to the use of time and space consuming tape storage and data retrieval. Our customers are already enjoying the benefits of the Asigra software, in terms of both cost and time saved.” SecurStore has deployed Asigra’s software and is marketing a managed backup and recovery service as SecurStore IP Backup. SecurStore is already delivering the SecurStore IP Backup service to some of Iceland’s largest and most successful national companies, including HB Grandi (one of Iceland’s major fishing companies that supplies international markets) and Og Vodafone, which has signed with SecurStore to offer the managed backup service to its large customer base. Og Vodafone is the new dual-brand name for Og Fjarskipti hf's telecommunications network and services, and was launched in co-operation with the Vodafone Group. Og Vodafone commenced operation on 16 April 2003 and is the outcome of a merger of Íslandssími, Tal and Halló! Frjáls fjarskipti. These three companies were in the competitive forefront of the Icelandic telecommunications market.
