Backup is the key to Information Lifecycle Management
ILM solutions can significantly reduce the cost and complexity of data storage, but to reap the greatest rewards, ILM relies on a backup system that is ILM-aware. ILM has two goals. One is to minimise administration costs. The other is to make the most efficient use of storage hardware. Without a backup architecture that maximises or even enables ILM, these goals cannot be realised effectively.

Asigra offers only agentless backup for iSeries
Remote D2D backup solution offers improved support for the iSeries server. With Televaulting version 6.2, Asigra hopes to persuade multi-site iSeries shops to drop the tape juggling act and make the switch to a network-based backup solution.

SMBs reject tape for online backup
SMBs are gradually looking to online remote services for their server backup requirements, but tape backup continues to have a firm hold on the market. "Tape is cheap, so if they back up at all, they primarily back up to tape," states Adam Couture, principal research analyst, Gartner Inc.

Q&A

Q: How does Backup Lifecycle Management help me to manage my storage costs more efficiently?

A: Backup Lifecycle Management (BLM) recognizes the need for multiple tiers of active backup data according to end-user priorities. BLM moves active data among these tiers as needed to accelerate recovery performance and minimize storage costs. BLM can also archive inactive, or stale, data in an “archiving vault.” This frees up the storage space occupied by stale files on the DS-System, to reduce the cost of protecting inactive files on-line, while creating historical point-in-time copies of backup sets and allowing compliance with company policies for data retention. A single BLM Archiver may manage data from one or more DS-Systems and from the relevant DS-Clients connected to it. The BLM Archiver can be monitored and configured using a dedicated Java-based GUI.
